How do you define kindness? Most people would intuitively answer that being kind means doing nice things for other people. Others might add that kindness includes being kind to oneself.

Is it difficult to be kind?

No. It’s easy.

It’s so easy that sometimes we do not realize how simple it can be.

What’s Kindness?

Kindness is being friendly, generous, and considerate. It’s the quality of being gentle, caring, and helpful.

The main sources of kindness are empathy and compassion, which we feel not only towards others, but also towards ourselves.

It also affects personal health. The results of a certain study showed that kind people experience lower levels of anxiety and stress. At the same time, they reported being in a better mood and having a noticeably improved ability for self-compassion and an increased level of life satisfaction.

Is It Good?

Research conducted among adults indicates that conscious acts of kindness and being mindful of kindnesses shown by others have a positive impact on mental health, including a better mood, increased level of happiness and a higher level of life satisfaction.

Practicing compassion, on the other hand, is correlated with an increased level of positive effect, the feeling of belonging and an improved level of personal resources, such as physical health, having a purpose in life, self-acceptance, mindfulness and positive relationships with others.

Is It Contagious?

It has been known for some time that good and bad emotions are contagious. Children who observe their parents engaging in acts of kindness, display a stronger tendency to be kind. Moreover, if the same norms are observed at school and among peers, being kind becomes second nature.

It’s nothing new that kindness, like a boomerang, comes back to the kind person. People have known it for centuries, that’s reflected in all ancient scriptures. Nowadays, we’ve scientific proof that good deeds, as well as kindness towards others and oneself, make our lives complete, purposeful and happy.

What’re Random Acts of Kindness?

A random act of kindness is an unexpected act of charity or helpfulness and is often done for a stranger.

The term refers to selfless acts, both large and small, that are committed unexpectedly, without prompting and with no apparent ulterior motive.

Examples might include paying for a coffee for the person in line behind you at the coffee shop, helping a person cross the street or leaving Smile Cards on the tables of your office colleagues. People generally use the term to refer to acts performed for strangers, but random acts of kindness can also be done for friends and family.

Acts of Kindness and Mental Wellness

Acts of kindness may help to improve mental health. There’s evidence that working to help others can be a way to cope positively with one’s own problems. Some people find that their own problems seem less severe when they help others, and the positive regard many people receive when they do kind things can help improve their mood.

A little act of kindness can go far. If you’re confused, here’re some kindness ideas.
